UNLIKELY PARTNERS BUILD SUCCESSFUL REMODELING FIRM
Combine a talented remodeling contractor and a not-ready-to-retire business consultant, and you have a winning partnership and a highly successful business. Seven years ago, Ron Waltrip and Trish Whisler founded Professional Remodeling LLC, serving the Kansas City area. Ron is the talented hands-on contractor who is known for the quality of his work and his attention to detail. Trish is the business consultant who had no previous background in the remodeling business, but does have an eye for quality and a background in startup businesses and what it takes to keep them on solid financial ground. The pair faced some challenges as they started their venture. Ron is hearing-impaired, and most of what he “hears” is through lip-reading. Trish had to learn to always look at Ron when she was speaking and also started classes in signing at a local community college. They both learned that people who sign don’t sign in full sentences; they may abbreviate their sentences or structure them in a more direct manner. They have turned this challenge into a strength that contributes to their attention to detail. Starting in the construction trades in his early teens, Ron learned as many skills as possible. He worked for several companies but often did jobs on his own, which is how he met Trish. He had completed a major project on a neighbor’s home, and she was so impressed with the craftsmanship that she hired him to remodel her home. At the time, Trish was retiring from her consulting job and wanted to start a business that she could run from her home. When she saw his attention to detail and his ability to impart a "wow" effect to a remodeling project, she told him, “If you ever want to go out on your own again, I’ll take over the business part and you do the creative work”. About a month later, he was back to talk, and Professional Remodeling was launched.
REPUTATION FOR QUALITY Relying entirely on referrals, Ron and Trish go together to the initial appointments with prospective clients. They know the importance of a strong start, and two people listening and seeing makes a big difference. They review the plans with clients and ask numerous questions to make sure they have the details. Once everyone is in agreement, Ron and Trish prepare a detailed bid to eliminate unexpected expenses for their clients and to ensure they have the information needed to set a completion date. Terry and Sam Mahoney started a kitchen and bath remodel in their southern Overland Park, Kan., home after they had a bad experience with a previous remodeling contractor. But what was supposed to be a small job morphed into a complete remodeling project that included new cabinets, floors, windows and siding, a sunroom, new ceilings and hardwood floors because they didn’t want to let Ron and his crew get away. Since then, Terry referred eight more jobs to the company. “Most of those people came in here to look at the work they did,” Terry said. “If you recommend someone to people, it’s important that you feel confident they will get the same quality and care. I don’t know anyone who’s not happy with the work Ron and Trish provide.” Krista Fort of northern Overland Park learned about Professional Remodeling from her interior decorator, Kathy Bryles of Becky Berg Design. “I could rave about him all day long,” Krista said. “I would recommend him without reservation. I can’t say enough good things about Ron.” Krista’s project was a combined effort. “I had my own ideas, a decorator helping, and Ron,” she said. “At times he’d pop up with these ideas, and Kathy and I would say, ‘We didn’t even think of that.’ “Ron is very methodical, a problem-solver. He’s not afraid to tell you that something won’t work. Sometimes ideas sound good, but they don’t translate well into reality.” Susann Schaum was nervous about the unusual design of her big room addition incorporating a curved wall of windows overlooking a wooded area in northern Overland Park, but she is thrilled with the results and enjoying the style with which Ron and his crew brought the outdoors indoors. Ron said, “My favorite thing is being creative, making a unique look ... so you can step back and say, ‘Wow.’" As a licensed general contractor, Ron is required to have worker’s compensation and liability insurance. Homeowners often don’t understand how important this is or that they could be sued if a worker is injured on the job and the contractor doesn’t have insurance, Trish said. Ron also passed the International Code Council certification test, which is mandatory in some counties and soon will be in all Kansas and Missouri cities. Ron and Trish focus on quality and making sure a job is done right. That goes a long way toward instilling trust in their clients “They were very up-front about the charges and gave very thorough explanations,” Krista said. “There’s a lot of trust that goes into choosing a contractor. If they cut corners that shouldn’t be cut, it can be very costly.” Clients who continue to live in their homes during construction appreciate the attention to cleanup that is part of Professional Remodeling’s regular service. Susann said, “We were aware they were there, but the crew was always respectful. They weren’t loud. Every day, they cleaned up meticulously when they left. And we’ve heard this from others who had work done by Ron and his crew." Krista also said, “I could call him if something went wrong, and he’d come out at the drop of a hat to take care of it. That’s huge.” How well Ron and Trish work together has not gone unnoticed by their clients. “They complement each other in so many ways,” Terry said. “When your home is finished, they are like part of your extended family. “Our house is our haven. We find peace and comfort here. We’ve established all these memories. I can go through my home and say I love this room. It has worked out well for our family. Everything is done with such love and care and expertise. I know they will continue to help other homeowners create their dream home.” - 10/23/2007 -- New Web Site
